A Mary Poppins inspired styled wedding shoot for You & Your Wedding Magazine. Vibrant blue and yellow hues with a spoonful of British humour and eccentricity (think kite-shaped stationary and flower-trimmed umbrellas). Photography by Anneli Marinovich.
You & Your Wedding had a new styling feature for readers who didn’t quite know where to start with regards to styling the décor for their wedding day, so You & Your Wedding brought Boutique Blooms on board to conjure up some styling magic. Bride-to-be Victoria Fisher told us she was struggling to combine blue and silver details with her fiancé’s favourite yellow hue. This immediately brought a fresh, fun and summer feel to mind I began to put together this Mary Poppins inspired shoot. We chose to shoot at Warren House in Kingston Upon Thames – a grand Victorian Mansion with exquisite gardens, just perfect for this British ‘Mr & Mrs Banks-esq feel’.
Crisp blue striped crockery and cheerful yellow linen dressed the tables. With ‘just a spoonful of sugar’ sugar cube favours with gorgeous personalised hand embossed miniature teaspoons by The Cutlery Commission. Kite shaped menus by Eagle Eyed Bride completed the Mary Poppin’s inspired look.
Laid back summer flowers filled vintage silver tea pots and sugar bowls from Idyllic Days. Delicate daisies, eye catching yellow roses and striking blue hydrangeas. Blue candles stood tall amongst the blooms in pretty silver candlesticks to add yet more colour to the table.
We dressed the chairs with vibrant blue hydrangeas and a yellow ribbon details. Chair flowers are a lovely detail often neglected but make a really personal and pretty touch. They are great during the ceremony or even just for the couple getting married on the backs of their chairs which can later be used for the top or sweet heart table.
I couldn’t not include the iconic magic chalk drawings as seen in the Mary Poppins film. This pretty chalk design by Eagle Eyed Bride may not be magic but it adds a fun element to any wedding day and is incredibly inexpensive to do. It’s also really useful way of introducing signage if your venue is particularly vast and your guests need some directions. We used the giant children’s jumbo chalks found at any craft or 99p type store. Make your stencils in advance for extra precision or why not try freehand.
A simple but pretty hand tied style bouquet was just perfect for this themed wedding. The gorgeous scented lemon David Austin rose brought in that truly English garden feel which complemented the Warren House venue beautifully. The delicate cream lisianthus gave another texture and the delicate blue cornflowers and daisies set the summer mood and gave the pops of colour to tie in with the theme.
We couldn’t not make reference to the iconic ‘feed the birds’ scene in Mary Poppins and these custom printed bags by Eagle Eyed Bride make a great alternative to confetti. Have your guests shower you with bird seeds on your big day and the local wildlife can swoop in at the end to do the tidying up! They are both a budget and environmentally friendly confetti and would make lovely favours too.
No wedding it seems is complete without a dessert table of sweet treats. Why not make your cake the centrepiece and adorn with thoughtful desserts complementary to your theme. The simple three tiered cake by Abigail Bloom with silver foil and blue pinstripe detail was then decorated with our fresh flowers in striking blue and yellow hues. I chose the other desserts and treats by Kalm Kitchen to complement the theme and season; blue berry jellies with shortbreasds, passionfruit delights with miniature silver spoon details, lemon flavoured macaroons and some fresh cloudy lemonade to wash it all down. The ‘just a spoonful of sugar’ stationary by Eagle Eyed Bride completed the themed dessert table.
This vintage blue Poppins-esq umbrella just had to have an outing. Hand sewn with fresh alstroemeria it was ‘practically perfect in every way’! A something blue any bride would be happy to hold and ever practical should the heavens open. Boutique Blooms encourage custom floral designs that extend beyond bouquets, button holes and centrepieces as shown with this pretty parasol.
